Allison Hawthorne Deming was born and grew up in Connecticut. Her new nonfiction book "[[A Woven World: On Fashion, Fisherman, and the Sardine Dress]]" was published in 2021. She is also the author of chapbooks, poetry collections and essays.

Deming received a Master of Fine Arts from Vermont College, a Wallace Stegner Fellowship from Stanford University, two poetry fellowships from the [[National Endowment for the Arts]] and fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, the [[Arizona Commission on the Arts]], the [[Tucson/Pima Arts Council]] and the National Writer’s Voice. Her work has been awarded the [[Pablo Neruda Prize]] from Nimrod, a [[Pushcart Prize]], the [[Gertrude B. Claytor Award]] from the [[Poetry Society of America]], the Best Essay Gold Award from the GAMMA Southeastern Magazine Association, and the Bayer Award in Science Writing from Creative Nonfiction for the essay “Poetry and Science: A View From the Divide.”

Former director of the [[University of Arizona Poetry Center]] and Agnese Nelms Haury Chair of Environment and Social Justice, she is now Regents Professor Emerita at the [[University of Arizona]], where in 2015 she founded the Field Studies in Writing Program. She lives in [[Tucson, Arizona|Tucson]] and Grand Manan, New Brunswick, Canada.
